My dog Max, a two-year-old Labrador, has a finicky appetite. He only likes a few different foods. Yet if I feed him the same thing too often, he gets tired of it. If this sounds like your dog, you may be wondering, which dog food brands should you feed your favorite four-legged friend?
After researching the bulk of dog food brands out there, I recommend two: NomNomNow and Supreme Source. These brands are nutritious, tasty, and good for even the pickiest eaters.
If you’re not familiar with either NomNomNow or American Journey, I’ll share more information about them in this article. Once you see why Max likes these dog food brands so much, you might be convinced to try them for your own dog!
What To Look For When Buying Dog Food
You could go to any grocer, pet store, or retailer and pick up a bag of dog food, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a quality product. Like you don’t put just any food into your own body, you have to have the same respect for your dog. Here are some things to keep in mind as you compare dog food brands.
Price
Expensive dog food, also referred to as premium food, is quickly catching on. Many consumers believe that by paying more for dog food, what they’re getting must be better. This isn’t always the case. Instead of looking at the price tag, check out the nutritional label instead. It’s much more telling.
Variety
We people don’t like to eat the same thing every day, and neither do our dogs. It’s best to pick a dog food brand that sells a variety of recipes. This way, your dog never gets tired of their offerings. If they have sensitivities, such as my dog Max does to wheat, you can also avoid certain flavors without skipping that brand altogether.
Ingredients
You want healthy ingredients in your dog food so your pup gets all the nutrients, minerals, and vitamins they need. This will allow them to grow into a full-sized, healthy adult.
Flavor
The last thing you should look for in dog food is arguably the most important, at least to your canine. That’s the flavor of the food. If your dog doesn’t like it, then it doesn’t matter what the brand is or how much you spent on it. You’ll have to keep looking.
The Top Two Brands for Dog Food
NomNomNow
NomNomNow is a brand of dog food Max has gone crazy over lately. They sell cat food as well if you happen to have a feline friend. All their meals come pre-portioned and made-to-order so they’re not only fresh but right for your dog’s nutritional needs as well.
American Journey
American Journey is sold exclusively through Chewy. They produce their food in the United States using nutrient-dense ingredients with deboned protein. There is never any soy, wheat, or corn products in the food, and many of them come grain-free as well. Like NomNomNow, you can get cat food through American Journey.
The Best Foods For Your Dog
Here are some of the specific recipes Max has eaten since he was just a puppy. They come from both NomNomNow and American Journey.
Porkalicious Potluck
Max can’t get enough of the Porkalicious Potluck from NomNomNow. The main ingredient is pork, which is chock full of minerals, vitamin B6, and protein. Also in this meal are:
- Fish oil with omega fatty acids
- NomNomNutrient Mix, a nutrition blend that’s exclusive to NomNomNow foods
- Mushrooms, which boast manganese, copper, zinc, potassium, and phosphorous
- Yellow squash, a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamins (B6, C, and K), and fiber
- Green beans for more minerals, vitamins (A, C, and K), and fiber
- Potatoes, which have lots of potassium
Heartland Beef Mash
With no gluten and all-natural ingredients, your dog will fall for NomNomNow’s Heartland Beef Mash like Max has. The ground beef used in the recipe has a great nutritional profile for stronger bones. There’s more to this tasty dish too, such as fish oils, the NomNomNutrient Mix, egg, peas, and potatoes.
Eggs deliver your dog zinc, iron, calcium, and protein while carrots are loaded with vitamin A for better vision.
Chicken Chow-Wow
The colorful Chicken Chow-Wow, another winning recipe from NomNomNow, will get your dog salivating for their meal. The diced chicken has all the protein and minerals your dog needs, and there’s also fish oil, the NomNomNutrient Mix, yellow squash, and sweet potatoes. These spuds are a superfood with their manganese, potassium, fiber, and vitamins (A, B6, and C).
Stews Poultry & Beef Variety Pack Canned Food
Moving on to American Journey products, Max is quite fond of their Stews Poultry & Beef Variety Pack. This is canned wet food that’s served in gravy. American Journey only uses authentic beef or chicken in their food. This gives your dog plenty of protein for healthy, lean muscle mass.
Whether your dog likes the chicken or beef can, both have toothsome carrots in the broth. The minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids can improve the look of your pup’s coat and skin. No preservatives, added flavors, artificial colors, or meat by-products are used.
Salmon & Sweet Potato Dry Food
You can also feed your dog dry food from Supreme Source, such as this Salmon and Sweet Potato Recipe. This bag comes in three sizes: four pounds, 12 pounds, and 24 pounds. I always buy the biggest size for Max.
The deboned salmon in dry food is authentic, thus providing more amino acids, fatty acids, and proteins. Sweet potatoes add sweetness to the mix while filling your dog with energy. Don’t miss the seaweeds, peas, fruits, and vegetables as these add a boost to the antioxidants, phytonutrients, and fiber in this meal.
Why I Recommend NomNomNow
I’ve fed NomNomNow foods to Max for over a year now. I love this brand so much mostly because Max does, too. I can also quite appreciate how healthy the food is. Should you start feeding your dog NomNomNow, you’ll find it’s not overly expensive. Each week, I spend about $35 on Max’s food.
The grain-free options from NomNomNow are great. The same can be said of American Journey as well. Max gets an upset stomach if he eats too many grains, so I have no choice but to give him grain-free food. With NomNomNow, that’s very easy. If your dog can handle grains just fine, then try the Tasty Turkey Fare recipe too. I didn’t review it here because it’s not grain-free, but it’s just as tasty as NomNomNow’s other stupendous offerings.
